Last One On Earth" verlassen hattest.

Wir denken "Death…The Brutal Way" ist der perfekte Nachfolger zu "Last One On Earth".

„Dan is The Man!“.

The Saw, The Torture, The Pain".

Bob Bagchus: Ich denke "Bloodswamp", "Asphyx II (They Died As They Marched)", "Eisenbahnmörser", "Black Hole Storm" und "Scorbutics".

Bob Bagchus: Ich weiß genau was du meinst.

English version of the interview...

DarkScene: Hi Bob! A few months ago, old-school Death Metal fans were applauding the fact that your former frontman Martin Van Drunen started an awesome, brand-new band named Hail Of Bullets. Now, just shortly after that pleasant surprise, you guys are releasing a brilliant new Asphyx album. Interesting what a reunion concert can trigger sometimes……. your thoughts?
Bob Bagchus: Yeah, well,we are surprised as well since we never intended to record a new album at all. But when Paul came up with some killer riffs we started jamming and those riffs kept coming and coming. We enjoyed them so much that we thought " what the fuck,we'll record them,no matter what people might say or think." Paul made whole compositions and they were 100% Asphyx .The funny thing about "Death...The Brutal Way" (review) is that it's actually a demo....
DarkScene: Seriously, please tell us how your new album came to life? Did you have a master plan for that whole reunion thing? I mean, when Martin left the band in 1992 after the "Last One On Earth" album, nobody thought that a new Asphyx album including Martin would be possible in the future.
Bob Bagchus: We didn't had any masterplan whatsoever. Jarne from the Party San just phoned me in September 2006,on a hot Saturday afternoon at around 1
5:30 and asked me to reform Asphyx with the original Rack line-up.I knew that it was going to be tough and pretty impossible to get Eric back so I said no at first. Then they kept calling me and eventually I thought "why not, for this one time only occasion...." ,so I phoned Martin and he was very excited. He always had the idea of doing something brutal with Asphyx again in the back of his mind anyway. But,as predicted, Eric said no and I said then no as well. But then Paul convinced Martin that he(Paul) was the man for the job and said he could replace Eric. Martin told me that and, again, I said no...but after 2 days I thought " what the heck, let's give it a try anyway" and here we are...yes,I know what you mean after the Last One On Earth story, lots of things happened back then, but people, like us, grow up so we don't bother.
DarkScene: Did hearing the Hail Of Bullets album influence you in any way to go back to your roots with Asphyx?
Bob Bagchus: No, not at all since Asphyx is always 100% Asphyx. We have other influences. Asphyx never left his roots and never will. We are probably the most conservative Death Metal band in the world, alongside with Obituary.

DarkScene: Do you think Asphyx and Hail Of Bullets can co-exist in the future next to each other taking into account that guitar player Paul Baayens also plays in both bands?
Bob Bagchus: Of course we can. We have a common band schedule and always keep eachother informed about gigs. Asphyx doesn't play that much anyway.
DarkScene: Even though the first two Asphyx albums are considered to be milestones of this genre, I would go so far to say that "Death… The Brutal Way" tops even those two killer albums. It´s pure energy. It´s the essence of your creative process. It´s the perfect blend between Death and Doom Metal. That´s the way Death Metal should sound like – old school and organic and yet not too polished. Do you agree?
Bob Bagchus: Thanx for the compliment! And..I totally agree! We think that "Death...The Brutal Way" is the perfect follow up for "The Last One On Earth" for sure. It's exactly what we had in mind and, of course, what we like. But,even more important, it comes from the soul. We play what we want to play and what we like best, it's all very natural. If we freak out on our own songs, then it's ok. And as people know, we hate clean and polished productions! Nothing can top a raw, pure, unpolished and sloppy production! That's the way real Death Metal should sound like.
DarkScene: How did the songwriting for "Death… The Brutal Way" come about? Did Paul, who replaced Eric Daniels on guitar, have any involvement in the writing? I´m sure you had a lot of pressure just keeping up with expectations coming from your status as legends of the genre. Were you even aware of that?
Bob Bagchus: All the riffs are from Paul's majestic hand. He made all the compositions. Then we, Paul, Martin and me went into the rehearsalplace and did the arrangements. Martin had some additional ideas, I had some additional ideas and it all came together. But, one could say that "Death...The Brutal Way" is Paul's baby. Of course we knew that the expectations were going to be high, but we felt no pressure since we are here to satisfy ourselves in the first place. If we, Asphyx ,like it then we'll record it. But I think we lived up to the expectations. Mostly the reviews and reactions are more then positive and we've been Album of the Month for several times now, so that makes us proud.
DarkScene: This new release of yours is a perfect “entity” – so to speak – a perfect combination of all aspects of an album. The artwork, the production and even the album title – everything just falls into place. Please, share a few thoughts on that.
Bob Bagchus: I think so as well...and it's all because the atmosphere is right and we could do a lot ourselves as well. Recording an album is a process of the right moment, sort of speak. And we felt no pressure since, as said, the album started out as a demo. But it all was recorded in the right mood/atmosphere and even weather that we knew we never could reach that special feeling again if we should re-record those songs again, so we knew we just had to use these recordings, and it shows perfectly. Frank Klein Douwel (our sound guy) did a fantastic job recording these songs in his Sonic Assault studio and Dan Swanö did a hell of a job mixing the beast.

DarkScene: There are a lot of modern albums out there that are on one hand perfectly produced but on the other hand sound sterile and have no identity at all. Your new album sounds very heavy, down to earth and organic. Contemporary, but still with a lot of charisma. Tell us a little bit about your cooperation with Dan Swanö and the production of the album.
Bob Bagchus: We told Dan that we wanted a raw, unpolished and natural production. A sound we have when we rehearse and play live. Dan understood this perfectly and since he also knows The Rack and The Last One On Earth he knew at once what the Asphyx sound was. He only needed 5 mixes, all was done in 2 weeks at most. So that all was very fast. We are not the type of band which analyses everything in a mix or playing. If it sounds good and natural to us then we'll leave it that way. It must be spontanious and to the bone with the right feeling. That's the reason why the album sounds raw, brutal and also a bit sloppy. That's our style. The cooperation with Dan was just perfect. Dan is the man!
DarkScene: Which songs of the album are your favorites and why? My highlights are "Scorbutics", "Cape Horn" and "The Saw, The Torture, The Pain".
Bob Bagchus: Those must be "Bloodswamp", "Asphyx II (They Died As They Marched)", "Eisenbahnmörser", "Black Hole Storm" and "Scorbutics" .Those songs are VERY to the bone and straight forward and I love that! But I like all the songs, to be honest. And of course, "Death...The Brutal Way" itself.
DarkScene: Tell us something about the lyrics on the album. Do some of them have a special meaning to you and why?
Bob Bagchus: I like the lyrics of Martin a lot on this album. They are dark, gloomy, direct and to the core. For example, "Eisenbahnmörser" is about Der Mörser from WO II, the biggest canon there was. So heavy, it had to be on a railway because of the backfire. There is even a great videoclip from it on YouTube. "Black Hole Storm" is about the big hole which sucks up everything, all existence as we know it. "Riflegun Redeemer" is about the urge you sometimes have to kill every motherfucker who screwed you or your family.

DarkScene: At what point in the production process did you realize what an amazing album "Death… The Brutal Way" was shaping up to? I ask, because you can´t really plan such energy and creativity in advance.
Bob Bagchus: Well,we realized it when we recorded the rehearsal versions on...a cassettetape. The same taperecorder Asphyx always used, since 1987...so that says something as well. When we listened to the songs on tape in the rehearsalroom, we looked at each other and knew this was it. Martin headbanged the whole time and freaked out of happiness. It's a feeling you have. Can't explain it exactly. We all are into the straight forward type of old school Death Metal, and hell, was/is this straight!
DarkScene: There are tons of talented newcomer bands around. But a lot of them are lacking the charisma and that “intangible little something” that bands like yourselves, Bolt Thrower or Obituary have. Can you appreciate some of those younger bands and do you think there are a few among them that have a serious chance to become more than just a spur of the moment?
Bob Bagchus: I know what you mean. They miss the impact what Death Metal makes real Death Metal....hard to explain but I understand you perfectly. But, yes, of course I can appreciate newer/younger bands. Some of them are in fact excellent and do stand out, like Necros Christos, Revolting, Hooded Menace, Hail of Bullets ,Bone Gnawer, Facebreaker or Ribspreader. Excellent bands! We played with Necros Christos on our release show in Turock in Essen and they are awesome! Total dark doom/death metal with the right feeling! Great!!
DarkScene: More and more veteran bands are doing reunions these days. Not all of them turn out to be as enjoyable as yours. On the other hand it gives new fans the possibility to discover older bands and old fans can experience their “heroes” one more time in a live environment. How do you see this development?
Bob Bagchus: Thanks for the compliment, again. Highly appreciated! Yes, new Death Metal fans can discover the oldies(speaking like this makes me really feel old),and maybe discover also that real death metal isn't about stupid blastbeats,10000 riffs in 1 song and bluurrghhhbluurrgghhhblabla and look how technical I am bullshit. Through bands like us or Obituary maybe they discover also the historical bands like Venom, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Possessed, Slaughter, Messiah or Necrophagia, so that's a good lesson in Death Metal as it was supposed to be in the first place.
DS_ Has the relation between you and Martin ever been really strained or did you just go separate ways at the time of his departure from the band? Did you stay in contact over the years?
1:We did go separate ways in 1992, after the Last One On Earth album, and there was some irritation back then. Also some press didn't help and we started to react to it. You know, things like "Martin said this and Bob said that.. etc. etc." But we got in good contact again somewhere in 1998,and we stayed in touch since then. We had a few beers again in the local pub and all was ok again. We've grown up and now we just laugh about it. Maybe it just had to happen since we have a great relationship again. We're very good friends again. Never been better, in fact!
DarkScene: The metal scene in general is becoming more and more popular these days. Which acts (young or old) do you think are responsible for this?
Bob Bagchus: Those must be the big bands like, not only Death Metal, Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell, even perhaps DevilDriver, and as for the extreme metal I think Cannibal Corpse is doing a great job worldwide.
DarkScene: There have been shows in the past where Asphyx and Hail Of Bullets shared the same stage. Is there a chance of a tour with both bands on the same bill without two guys having a physical breakdown in the long run?
Bob Bagchus: No, there is no chance that both bands will do a tour together. That's too much for Martin and Paul and besides that it takes down the exclusivity of both bands as well. Eventhough both bands sound totally different, it's absolutely out of the question. We'll have drinking parties with both bandmembers instead!
DarkScene: Do you think of releasing another album after "Death… The Brutal Way"?
Bob Bagchus: Yes,in fact, there is already some new material. First we'll do a split 7" with Hooded Menace and after that we'll start working on a new album.
