Dissona: Die Band entstand aus den Resten von The Vision, einer Metal/Rock-Gruppe von Gitarrist Matt Motto und mit Sänger David Dubenic. Nach diversen Besetzungswechseln sind nun Craig Hamburger, Drew Goddard und Logan Wright mit von der Partie. Alle von uns haben einen musikalischen Background, wir sind etwa im gleichen Alter und musikalisch gleich gesinnt.

Dissona: Wir neigen seit jeher zum Heavy Metal mit allen seinen "dunklen" Ablegern. Diese Musikrichtung verbindet Menschen, die andere Stile in dieser Art nicht schaffen. Wir wussten genau, wir schreiben diese Art von Musik und versuchten von Anfang an, beim Schreiben diverse Einflüsse und Stimmungen zu vermischen, wie sie zu einem jeweiligen Song mit den Emotionen passen. Und dieser Ansatz ermöglicht es uns, den größtmöglichen Spielraum und die Freiheit zu erfassen - genau - wie wir es wollen. Deshalb haben wir uns keine Regeln gesetzt, sondern nehmen das Kompositionsmaterial, was zum fertigen Lied passt. Das ist mit ein Grund, warum wir Dissona gründeten.

Dissona: Uff, schwierige Frage. Jeder in der Gruppe hat seine eigene, riesige Sammlung von Einflüssen. Angefangen von bekannten Musikern, Instrumentalisten sowie unbekannten Künstlern; wirklich alles. Es hängt als Musiker immer davon ab, welche Musik zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt im Kopf des Jeweiligen schwirrt!

Dissona: "Dissona" wurde zwischen 2009-2011 geschrieben, wobei sogar einige Abschnitte und Leckerbissen noch älter sind. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde aus der recht großen Menge an Material, die wir komponierten, wiederum eine ganzes Album. Die stärksten Songs nahmen wir auf und es spiegelt die vielen Gesichter der Gruppe. Von der positiven Seite und allem Dazwischen. Es ist eine konzeptionelle Verbindung, die alles zusammenhält und sich wie ein roter Faden durchzieht. Dissona bieten für jeden Metal-Fan etwas, und natürlich wollen wir, dass ihr alles mögt. Das Album ist auf der Bandcamp-Seite als Download und als CD-Erstpressung sowie über Amazon erhältlich. Hört es euch an und wenn es euch gefällt, es ist derzeit bei uns noch auf einer "Pay what you want"-Rate.

Dissona: Das Feedback war überwältigend positiv. Vor allem die Europäer sind sehr daran interessiert! Wahrscheinlich sind 90% der Fans aus Übersee. Es Ist immer überraschend, von woher neue Kontakte kommen. Das Internet ist ein wunderbares Instrument, und wir sind froh, es nutzen zu können. Wir lesen die Kritiken zu unseren Alben und nehmen diese absolut ernst. Wir bekommen überwiegend nur Positives zu hören und zu lesen und negative Kritiken sind Gott Sei Dank nicht so viele dabei! Und wer uns dann nicht mag, es ist eben so. Jeder der unser Album hört, entscheidet.

Dissona: Nein, haben wir nicht! Jede Unterstützung, die wir bekommen, erhalten wir innerhalb der Band, unseren Familien, von Fans und Freunden sowie unserer freundlichen Nachbarschaft!

Dissona: So peinlich es klingt, niemand von uns hatte etwas an Fates Warning auszusetzen. Wir sind uns der enormen Bedeutung von Fates Warning durchaus bewusst und es war uns eine Ehre, mit ihnen spielen zu dürfen. Immerhin waren sie die Wegbereiter des Progressiven Metals, also des fortschrittlichen Heavy Metals. Ja, natürlich! Wir möchten einmal bei euch spielen. Wenn alles gut geht, wäre der Zeitpunkt nach dem nächsten Album ideal.

Dissona: Natürlich! Wir schreiben bereits am Nachfolger zu "Dissona". Wir haben bereits ein Artwork konkretisiert, und ein musikalisches Grundkonzept erstellt und schauen, ob wir das noch unbetitelte Album 2014 veröffentlichen können.

English version of the interview!

Dissona: We’re a metal band consisting of a bunch of early to mid 20s guys who love metal and music. Boooooring. We all have day jobs that keep us grounded and disgruntled, but Dissona is what really gives us momentum.

Dissona: We hail from the southwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, in and around the Joliet area. Except Drew who is a semi-recent transplant out of St. Louis, Missouri.

Dissona: All of us from an early age were naturally inclined toward heavy metal and all of its dark and mysterious hallways. There’s been a connection with it, as I’m sure fellow metal fans can agree, that other genres can’t entirely recreate. We settled on our brand of it not so much intentionally. It was more that we wanted to write the kind of music we wanted to hear. The progressive tag fits, I suppose, because we don’t really limit ourselves in our exploration of different styles and moods. Whatever will fit the song/emotion desired, we insert. We feel that this approach allows us the most possible breathing room and freedom to capture exactly what we mean to capture.

Dissona: Of, tough one. Everyone in the group has their own massive collection of influences, from fellow instrumentalists to artists to anything, really. Depends who you want to ask, I guess! As musicians, we are usually most influenced at any given time by the music we’re shoving in our skulls.

Dissona: Dissona arose from the ashes of The Vision, a metal/rock group formed by guitarist Matt Motto and featuring David Dubenic, Craig Hamburger, and others who came and went. Matt recruited Craig and Logan from his high school guitar class and Craig brought in David on vocals, having played together with him in a few fledgling metal groups. The current incarnation of Dissona, rounded out with St. Louis transplant drummer Drew Goddard, has been playing together for about 4-5 years. All of us have a musically educated background, are around the same age (early to mid-20s), and are like-minded enough musically in our tastes and preferences that our current roster has been not only our most stable, but most rewarding as well.

Dissona: We do not. Any support we have comes from within the band and our friendly neighborhood friends, family, and fans.

Dissona: "Dissona" was written from primarily 2009-2011, with some portions and tidbits dating back even earlier than that. We had written quite a large amount of material in the years prior to its release, so we ended up choosing the strongest songs of the bunch and then adding a couple near the end before recording. The music shows the many sides of our group, from the light to the heavy and all ways in between. As such it’s a pretty diverse record, but there is a conceptual link that ties the album together. That’s Mr. Dubenic’s forte, though, so you’ll have to pry his brain a bit on that one. We feel that Dissona has something for every metal fan to enjoy, but hopefully they just dig it all. Dissona: Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Europeans especially have been very keen to it! Well, the few who have heard it that is. As much as we like to read more sharply critical analyses of our music, we thankfully have not had too much of that for this album and our music in general. Haters please feel free to hate, though.

Dissona: Probably a good 90% of our fans are overseas! We’re always surprised at the distances our material travels around the world, of its own accord and through more straightforward contact with us. The internet is really a marvelous tool, and we’re so glad we can harness it to reach out to anyone and everyone around the globe who decides to listen.

Dissona: As embarrassing as it sounds, none of us have really had enough exposure to Fates Warning. We’re terribly sorry and it will be rectified quickly and without complaint! But seriously, we are aware of the tremendous importance Fates Warning has in the development of the worlds of progressive and heavy metal music, and we are absolutely honored to be able to share the stage with such a presence.

Dissona: Yes. We would like to play in Europe even once, ever. Maybe some time after the next album if all goes well?

Dissona: Not too familiar with growfound, but Kickstarter is a pretty neat tool for everyone, not just us musicians. It seems that the market is recognizing more and more (be it for better and for worse) that just about every individual is a potential consumer of product. Kickstarter focuses on this individualistic power to pretty great effect, and in music’s case this allows any fan of a kickstartin’ band to give infinite support to their dudes. Nothing wrong with that!

Dissona: Writing of the follow-up to "Dissona" is underway, yes. We have a concept fleshed out, a bit of artwork, and some concrete material written. We’re looking at a 2014 release date for this one, which is as yet untitled.
