"Coat Of Arms" ist unser bisheriges Meisterstück!

Wie kommt so was?

Pär Sundström: Ich will keine Veränderungen.

DarkScene: Time for Darkscene-sludge! Was fällt dir spontan zu folgenden Bands ein:

Pär Sundström:
Accept = Inspiration
Nightwish = Female vocals
Manowar = Joey
Demon = Ein Konzert in Belgien
Rammstein = Pyros
Mayhem = Crazy guys
Europe = der Beginn jeder Sabaton Show. Ein fantastisches Gefühl
Deicide = eine glaubwürdige Band
Hammerfall = Inspiration
Keine Band!
Tigertailz = 80er Jahre

Aber ich will riesige Shows erschaffen.

worden?

Pär Sundström: Guns N Roses"The Spaghetti Incident".

Sommer oderr Winter = Sommer
Nightwish oderr Volbeat = Nightwish
Angela Gossow oder Tarja Turunen = Tarja
Christentum oder Atheismus = Atheismus
Homer oder Al Bundy = Al Bundy
Henrik Larsson oder Zlatan Ibrahimovic = Zlatan
Jennifer Aniston oder Angelina Jolie = Angelina
Stockholm oder Göteborg = Göteborg
Europe oder Abba = Europe
Fußball oder Hockey = Hockey
Poison oder Deicide = Poison
USA oder Asien = Asia
Österreich oder Deutschland = Österreich!!!

DarkScene: Dein alltime Fave (artist/record):

ENGLISH VERSION

DarkScene: I'm writing this interview just a few days after the release of your live album "World War Live - Battle Of The Baltic Sea". Please tell us a little bit about this album. What can fans expect from it?

Pär Sundström: The main show of the CD is kinda special as it was recorded on a evening where we did not had a fixed setlist, we improvised as we went along. It was a magic night aboard a ship with nearly 2000 Sabaton fans.

DarkScene: The song list is massive. Did you record the songs at one single show or during the entire tour?

Pär Sundström: The main part is from one show in December but we also recorded many other shows and the CD-2 of the album is from all over Europe.

DarkScene: The World War Tour seemed to do perfectly for you guys. Attendances were huge everywhere and you presented yourselves in top shape and in the best mood. Things are looking pretty good at the moment in the Sabaton camp, aren't they?

Pär Sundström: Its definitivly cooking, we have so much to do so it has been the most hectic time of my life but we love it. We had a great tourstart with most of the tour being sold out and now that we do the final part of the World War Tour in Europe it looks great again. While we do the interviews for the live album we already plan the next studioalbum, more tours and book festivals for 2012. Its busy! Hehe.

DarkScene: It's quite obvious that you guys have tons of fun on stage. Your band is 100% authentic, credible and absolutely likeable. It seems you're having a blast no matter what - if there are 5.000 people in the audience or just 50. Would you agree that the enormous energy you're displaying as a band is a crucial part of your success?

Pär Sundström: From the first time we went on a stage I said to my mates that I will always give 100% no matter how many people are in the crowd and I would not want to play with anyone who thinks different. And as we are still the same members now 12 years later I guess my mates felt the same. There is something special with playing in Sabaton, we are all very focused on enjoying a show.

DarkScene: Despite the recent release of "World War Live - Battle Of The Baltic Sea" I briefly wanna go back to your last studio album "Coat Of Arms". How would you compare this awesome album to its predecessors and what does it mean for the evolution of Sabaton as a band?

Pär Sundström: I do not think actually that "Coat of Arms" was a evolution of the band, it was more of simply a continuation of a already powerful band. The most interesting with that album was that we worked on another way. We did the recording ourselves and took professional help with drums and mixing. That was something we wont do again in the future. Too many bands do this and we dont think its good. Next album will be done in a studio, with producers and engineers, like the good old albums were done.

DarkScene: When did you decide to NOT do another concept album?

Pär Sundström: We had no idea of a concept for "Coat of Arms" and we wanted to focus more on simple Sabaton metal songs and not so hard on the concept. I think sometimes that "The Art of War" was too much and prefer to listen to "CoA" since they are just a bunch of good songs while "The Art of War" needs more time.

DarkScene: The reactions from fans and press all over the globe must have been overwhelming, weren’t they?

Pär Sundström: It was great. Of course some people still say that "Metalizer" or "Primo Victoria" is better, but I cannot agree with those. I think Sabaton just getting better and better and "CoA" is until today our masterpiece.

DarkScene: The video clip to the anthemic "Uprising" (also the amazing "Screaming Eagles" video) has been perfect to promote the album for sure. Tell us a little bit about the shootings of this two incredible clips, and also about the work with Peter Stormare – probably the coolest European actor at the moment…

Pär Sundström: They were two completely different videos to produce. "Screaming Eagles" was very easely done with our part as we just played in a white room in Stockholm, it took maybe 3 hours to do the whole thing for us and then the director had a huge job to dig trenches and then wait for the show to shoot the video. On "Uprising" it was simply an amazing time in Poland, it was a huge thing including 300 people working several days. 200 extras were used in the video and several famous actors. Peter is a fan of metal and Sabaton and we come from the same region in Sweden. Peter was a lot of fun to work with, very professional and also very relaxed in his acting. We think Peter is a lot of the video even he is only there a few seconds.

DarkScene: How did you come up with the budget for such amazing clips? There are rumors floating around that the Polish government contributed to the making of this clip. How did you manage to accomplish this?

Pär Sundström: We have powerful friends in Poland and of course it would not have been possible for Sabaton or our recordlabel to pay for such a video. A investment bank named SKOK were one of the main sponsors and we think that its really cool that such a company decided to support heavy metal. Poland is a country where a lot of people like metal and the organisors of our concerts there is everything from City councils, government, military, museums and more.

DarkScene: My personal favorite on "Coat Of Arms" is the song "Sabateurs" with its killer rhythm and that sensational chorus. Which songs of the new album do you prefer and why?

Pär Sundström: "Sabotuers" is also my favourite, actually the songs guitarriffs is old as the "Metalizer" songs. I always wanted the song to be included already on "Primo Victoria", "Attero Dominatus" and "Art of War" but it was never completed, until now. And I simply love it.

DarkScene: Sabaton has been in this business for over a decade by now and a member of the Darkscene writing staff – Bruder Cle – told me some legendary stories from way back at the beginning of your career and he also raves about the great degree of professionalism in your band even in the early days. Looking back, how much has your life changed since then and what risks on a personal and financial level did you have to take in the process?

Pär Sundström: Well, I always had a clear plan on how to work and while Joakim could focus on the songwriting I could to the management. I learned everything I needed to run the band and kept the management within the band. And that the band did not rise over a night helped me to always be in control of everything, something I am very thankful that I did now. It came at a high price and I´ve lots lots of friends, girlfriends and I shall not talk about the economy. I had a good payed job as manager for a big company which I quite to work fulltime for Sabaton for 5 years without getting payed anything. But I had and still have the time of my life!

DarkScene: At which point in time did you decide on the „concept“ for Sabaton? From your early days on, you seem to be very dedicated in pursuing your career in a very consequent fashion.

Pär Sundström: There are 2 things that made me believe in the band fully.
The first was when I heard the final mix of the album "Primo Victoria", I knew then it was really good. And the second was when people from distant places without any personal connection to us in the band said it was not only good but “BEST”.
Parents and friends will always lie and say it rocks but when just random people loves it I knew that we had something that was worth fighting for.

DarkScene: What about the future: Is it possible, that Sabaton will ever change their musical direction?

Pär Sundström: I do not want it, and I think that Sabaton has a very wide musical direction. While there are songs like "4
0:1" which is simply powermetal songs there are songs like "Final Solution" and "Angels Calling" that is totally something different.

DarkScene: How would you summarize the first decade of Sabaton? I’m sure you’re pretty proud of your achievements so far…

Pär Sundström: I am very proud, and what I am most proud of is that we are still a intact lineup. There is still a long way to go for the band since we have so far only conquered one continent of the world. The intention of calling the tour “World War Tour” was to conquer the world, but time was not on our side and also we are not ready for some continents yet. We have just started to take on America and it looks like it will work, it needs of course some time and lots of touring.

DarkScene: Seeing you perform live gave me the impression that - aside from being a truly professional musician - deep inside you’re more or less still a totally dedicated Metal fan which makes you very likeable. True?

Pär Sundström: I love metal and I love concerts and festivals. I dont have much over for boring things so I live my life easy and usually on the run. I dont like home and I dont like to settle down. If I could choose I would tour all the time and when I was not on tour I want to live on a festival camping.

DarkScene: How come that you have a permanent smile on your face on stage? It seems you’re cloud nine petmanently. Is this pure satisfaction, or wahts the name of the drug??? ;)))

Pär Sundström: Love to the music, love to the fans. They show their love and I cannot hide mine. I am a happy and very simple person. I think I can count the times I´ve been angry on one hand.

DarkScene: If you had to explain your band to a complete stranger that hasn’t heard of Sabaton before, which 3 songs would you play for him that characterize Sabaton most properly and why?

Pär Sundström: I would play the songs I think he would like most. If its a real metalhead I play something like "4
0:1" and if its a person who maybe dont like metal I would go for songs like "Cliffs of Gallipoli".

DarkScene: How does Par Sundström spend his days when not in the studio or on tour?

Pär Sundström: We have a headquarters in our hometown Falun. There we have the studio, my mangement office, our production managers office, warehouse for all the stuff Sabaton own, warehouse for the webshop and also offices for our scandinavian booking agency aswell as the people working with our festival Rockstad:Falun. Its a busy big organisation in a very creative house. I spend my time here or drinking at the pub.

DarkScene: What’s the status of Sabaton these days? You’re big shots in the Metal community. Is that already enough for a carefree rockstar lifestyle?

Pär Sundström: Oh no, its a long way to go. We can live from music as long as we tour like hell but once we are back home it gets tough. And I dont think I will ever be a carefree person. Its just not me, I want to be in control and always work. I am a true workoholic.

DarkScene: Time for Darkscene-Sludge! We do a thing called word association. We mention a name and you give us the first thing that pops into your head:

Pär Sundström:
Accept = Inspiration
Nightwish = Female vocals
Manowar = Joey
Demon = A concert in Belgium
CrashDiet = Dave Leppard wanking off in a corner on a party
Rammstein = Pyros
King Diamond = Actually my old friend who used to be good at imitating King Diamond
Virgin Steele = A band I only heard the name, never cared for
Mayhem = Crazy guys
Europe = Start of a Sabaton show, fantastic feeling.
Deicide = Cred band
Hammerfall = Inspiration
Hardcore Superstar = I like the drummer, Adde
Judas Priest = A band that should have quit when they were on top
Dimmu Borgir = Anger, that they did not replied when we wanted to book them for our festival.
In Flames = A singer and a band, not a band.
Tigertailz = 80´s
Iron Maiden = The concert we did together in Sweden 2011 infront of close to 60 000 people.

DarkScene: For you personally, what were the biggest moments in your career with Sabaton so far?

Pär Sundström: The recording of "Primo Victoria" and then the concert we did on the battlefield in Poland called Wizna which we sing about in "4
0:1".

DarkScene: What was the most embarrassing thing that happened so far in your life as a musician?

Pär Sundström: When I had promised the fans a huge pyroshow in a show in 2009 and everything was destroyed by a clumsy collegue and also rain.
DarkScene: Of all the bands you played with so far in your career, who were the coolest and who were the biggest dicks to deal with?

Pär Sundström: The coolest was Scorpions, much due to the circumstances. Scorpions, Russia, private plane and sold out arenas. The biggest dicks were Dragonforce the first days we toured together in 2006, but it all changed. It was much due to their tourmanager and some crewmembers which they dont work with anymore. Today Sabaton and Dragonforce are good friends and we have played much together after that.

DarkScene: What was the main reason for you to become a musician? Who did influence and inspire you? Who are your heroes?

Pär Sundström: Sex was one of the things. I looked at Kiss videos at my friends place. Another thing was the shows, I always liked big stagesets, lots of lamps and pyros. And if you play Jazz it will never happen. My heroes were never bassplayers as I dont think there are any bassplayers who are as cool as some of the frontmen. Dee Snider and Sebastian Bach were my two sources of inspiration.

DarkScene: Do you still have that one single big dream you want to fulfill yourself as a musician?

Pär Sundström: Not as musician, I dont care about that. But I want to create enourmous shows, featuring lots of actors, tanks, effects and such.

DarkScene: Describe the first 2 hours of a typical day in the life of Par Sundström …

Pär Sundström: I go up between 7-8, and then I start with answering the mails that has come in during the night, mostly american mails. Then I go to the gym.

DarkScene: In which Rock/Metal album were you most disappointed in?

Guns N Roses"The Spaghetti Incident".

DS: How many minutes ago did you start getting annoyed by this never ending interview?

Pär Sundström: I have not yet been annoyed, but this question made me actually a bit, haha.

DarkScene: With which bands would you like to share the stage one time?

Pär Sundström: Metallica!

DarkScene: Who are the 3 biggest rock/metal bass players of all time?

Pär Sundström: There are none. But if Dee Snider, Bruce Dickinsson and Sebastian Back would have played bass it would have been them.

DarkScene: Of the following, which so you prefer and why?

Pär Sundström:

DarkScene: Immortal question at the end…..for quite a while now Darkscene is organising metal concerts in a damn cool club in Innsbruck….what would we have to do to bring Sabaton to Innsbruck??

Pär Sundström: Book us.

DarkScene: Last question, Par, have you ever clicked on www.darkscene.at before?

Pär Sundström: Yes, I´ve checked out reviews so that you are on our side ;)

DarkScene: Any last words to your fans in Austria?

Pär Sundström: One last chance to show us that you kick ass, come in Vienna in September and lets make a concert that the german shows that follows will have no chance to beat it!

DarkScene: Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this interview. I really appreciate it.

Pär Sundström: Thank you too!
